Developing an up-to-date Resume/Curriculum Vitae
A Résumé by itself won’t get you the job, but it’s often the most important factor in determining whether candidates are shortlisted for a job interview. So getting your Résumé right is essential. It needs to sell you, but not oversell you. It needs to be succinct but not lose the key substance of your key skills and experience. The structure and content needs to meet the expectations of hiring managers and recruiters, but it needs to be appropriately individualised to sell YOU.
We have worked with many hundreds of job seekers to develop a Résumé that ticks all these boxes and more, and that gets you positively noticed and shortlisted for the job interview.
Writing effective cover/application letters
In addition to having an attention-grabbing Résumé, part of the job application almost always involves writing an accompanying cover letter. Generic, one-size-fits all cover letters can be very off-putting for employers and recruiters. To help you stand out, the cover letter needs to effectively and specifically sell you for the role being applied for. Using a results-proven structure we are able to help job seekers write persuasive cover letters that, together with their Résumé, help to secure a job interview.
LinkedIn Profile
Increasingly employers and recruiters want and expect that job seekers will have a positive online presence, and LinkedIn has now become almost an essential tool in the job seeking process. Most prospective employers check to see whether job applicants have a LinkedIn profile, and use this information to assist in the recruitment and selection process. The fact is that not having a LinkedIn profile is becoming increasingly risky for job seekers in terms of not progressing in the job application process.
We work with job seekers to create an appealing and impressive LinkedIn profile that maximises the selling power of this increasingly popular professional marketing tool.
Job Search Strategy
Having the essential ‘tools of the trade’ in terms of job seeking (i.e., Rèsumè, Cover Letter, and LinkedIn profile) are essential in terms of being shortlisted for jobs, but as a job seeker you also have to know where to look for jobs. On average 70% of jobs aren’t advertised – so if you are relying on a job search strategy that only focuses on the ‘visible’ job market you are preventing yourself from accessing the ‘hidden’ job market, which is where most of the jobs are. We work with you to develop a multi-pronged job search strategy to make sure that you aren’t missing any opportunities, and to identify more job openings than the average job seeker.
Help with job interviews
The job interview ultimately makes or breaks your job application. Most job seekers fear and downright dread this part of the process – despite all of the hard work they have done to get there! The majority of job seekers also don’t feel very confident in their interview performance, and many also experience high levels of performance anxiety. The good news is that with the right preparation, and some key strategies during the interview, job seekers can go from being average as interviewees to very good (and even great).
We work with job seekers to break down the myths and perceptions around interviews, to develop an effective interview preparation plan, to become skilled and confident in answering the different type of questions that are commonly asked, and to excel in terms of their verbal and nonverbal behaviour during the interview.
Career/Vocational Assessment
Determining a good-fit career direction is often difficult. Successful career selection is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together, and needs to take into account key factors such as abilities, personality, values, work preferences, and work interests. Unfortunately, people often only consider one or two of these factors when deciding what program or course to study, or which career direction to go in, and as a result subsequently find themselves dissatisfied and disillusioned.
Whether you are looking at changing career direction, or considering your career ahead as a secondary student, our comprehensive career/vocational assessment can assist you in making a successful and considered career decision.
General career counselling
If you’re not happy in your current job or career, and you’re not sure where to start or what do to, it’s often useful to start with a session of general career counselling. We provide general career counselling on a sessional basis, to assist clients in thinking through and deciding upon their current job/career situation and future career direction, and to identify the specific steps that they need to take to achieve their career goals.
We can provide guidance and advice in our Adelaide or Melbourne offices or over the phone to any location in Australia.
